Selected items from the John Lipscomb Johnson papers in the Southern Historical Collections at the University of North Carolina, including: Correspondence of University of Virginia student/alumnus Henry Clay Pate, dated 1850-1856, written to his family in Virginia; Sketch of the Life of Randolph Faifax, by the Reverend Philip Slaughter (Richmond, 1864); and, Papers of the Reverend John Lipscomb Johnson, dated 1863-1870, chiefly in response to his request for biographical data on the University of Virginia men killed in the Civil War to be used in his book, The University Memorial; and, biographical sketches, n.d., of Confederate soldiers written by relatives and received by Reverend Johnson for use in his book.

Rev. Philip Slaughter (1808-1890), Episcopalian clergyman, historian, and author. He was associate editor of the Southern Churchman, pastor of Emmanuel Church in Culpeper County, and historiographer of the diocese of Virginia.
